Amritsar, June 12Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar, a high-profile convict in the 1993 Delhi bomb blast case, has been admitted to the psychiatry ward of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar amid tight security arrangements, a doctor examining him said on Friday.
Bhullar, who was to be shifted to the high-security Central Jail at Amritsar, had previously been taken to the hospital where he was examined by a team psychiatrists led by Dr PD Garg. The doctor confirmed the development, adding that his medical condition prompted the decision.A cavalcade of vehicles, including ambulances, reached the Amritsar Central Jail earlier in the day at 1.30 pm. Bhullar, who was in the ambulance, was escorted by vehicles of the Delhi and Punjab Police.His medical examination would be conducted at the Central Jail.Members of the Sangarsh Committee, comprising radical Sikh leaders, had previusly met Bhullar in jail and reported he appeared fine. His wife is expected to reach Amritsar by evening.Special security and medical arrangements had been put in place ahead of Bhullar’s arrival at the jail. It has been learnt that certain area around a barrack has been cordoned off. Bhullar will have to share this barrack with another inmate, besides four security guards who would be assigned duties on rotational basis. An assistant superintendent of jail would be looking after the security aspect.In a sudden shift of stand towards Sikh militants lodged in various jails across the country, the Punjab Government processed the cases for transferring eight more such persons to various jails in the state, besides Devinder Singh Bhullar.
